Wednesday and Thursday March 1

It is March. I double checked.

Clearly, I'm not there this afternoon.

I recorded Chapter 3 of the novel for you to listen to.

I did also record a screencast of Chapter 4 of Citr for you to listen to as well. The textbooks are in the room, please don't leave with any of them, thanks.

Please either read the chapter on your own during class time or listen with headphones by yourself or with the entire class.

Y'all can figure that out, but myself personally, I'd pick the headphones by myself.

Anyway, for Friday have the Webquest to me and up to Question 6 in from the Questions on the Novel finished, please.

Might also be a good idea to peak at how to do the Vocabulary and get at least five of those done today, too.

Monday and Tuesday Feb 27

Here are the citations ... not sure they are perfect, but there you go

...I think the last one, we did in class.

we also read Chapter 1 of Citr and did some chatting about the piece of writing due on Wednesday.

Friday and Monday Feb 26

Today ... more writing. Specifically more Task 3 writing.

We will also do a bit of work on Catcher in the Rye. We may even read the first chapter or two.

Thursday Feb 22

On to Task 3 ... Writing!

Step one is to pick a question to answer.

So ... a thesis is something you have to write in Step Two

  • A thesis is an arguable opinion
  • The thesis states the main idea of the piece of writing
  • In a literary piece of writing a thesis identifies the topic
  • It is usually, but not always, the last sentence in the introductory paragraph of a literary essay

You also have to do Step Three ... thinking on paper ... NOT "brainstorming" ...

Step Four is putting together a DRAFT Version of the piece of writing.

We will also cover what MLA Format/publication guidelines are, too!

On Monday we will do how to do a "List of Works Cited" page.

All good. On to the next!

Tuesday Feb 20

Well, I have to admit, I didn't post a screencast about the Paragraph writing process the way I said I would.

I apologise. Here is the link to the screencast.

Hope that helps!

Thursday Feb 15

Today was a different day.

We started off with some housekeeping items - some ideas for the summer and some things to look at for this semester.

We then did some presentations. In this class, I think we got like eight done. I was suitable impressed and during the breaks between presenters, I mentioned ToastMasters. A great way to learn about presenting.

After the presentations for the day were done, we talked a little about the Task Three Paragraph piece of writing, how to get it done and the time lines for handing it in. See the .pdf on the right-hand side of the blog entitled “Task Three Help”

See you Tuesday!

Tuesday Feb 13

Today we followed up with a question I asked in class a few weeks ago. The question was if anyone knew the book or film Tuesdays with Morrie.

I was a sad teacher until today. Today we started a mini unit study of the film itself. It would be better if we could read the non-fiction book, but alas ... time is fleeting.

By the way ... you did know if your clock is hungry it goes back four seconds ..... ;)

Here are the quotes from Tuesdays with Morrie

Friday and Monday Feb 12

Wingham .... where Alice Munro lives

I am so sorry for not posting on Friday. I apologise.

Friday we did a short non-fiction piece "Ode to a user-Friendly Pencil". I will get the link up shortly.

Today we read the short story 'Boys and Girls" by Alice Munro. What. A. Story.

We also did a bit to open up the D2L Bringhtspace part of this course. Try logging in, but use Chrome's Web browser. The D2L really won't function properly if you use another piece of software.

Thursday Feb 8

We moved forward.

We had some discussion about option sheets in this class, as well as the links for the Short Pieces Task 2, too

We also read ... or re-read ...Chapter 6 from a book called "Read Literature like a Professor". Chapter Six was "When in Doubt it's from Shakespeare."

A great read, and some discussion, too.

This is also a selfie of the teacher ... but really it's Shakespeare.

Wed Feb 7

There were a bunch of students in my Period Four class and we moved forward. We read the next piece for the Short Pieces unit called "How to read literature like a professor, Chapter 6".

Was #awesome because #teacherisprofessional and #teacheriscool.

No, not really cool, but ..."cool-ish".

Right, on to tomorrow!

not anywhere near the appearance of the teacher of your class.

Tuesday Feb 6

Well it was a pretty awesome class today.

We talked a little bit about option sheets for later on this week. We also talked about the terms - the powerpoint is on the right-hand side of the blog.

We read the story The Veldt by Ray Bradbury, too.

Done.

Monday Feb 5

So ... we are off to a great start.

Today we started the class with the usual mix of things: a "Getting to know you form" and a course outline for 2D English.

(I'll post both of these documents on the right-hand side of the blog for everyone to have access.)

We also read a short story called "Just Lather, That's All" by Hernando Tellez. A great story with five or six questions at the end. Not sure I can post the story, but I will post the questions to be answered also on the right-hand side of the blog.

I thought the day went well. I'll be chatting about uniform and due dates .... and the "Literary terms" we will need to know for the course tomorrow.

Always strive to be better than yesterday!
